Hey, I'm soon to be applying for a film school in Los Angeles, and they ask for a portfolio, so i wanted to make a short. I just wanted to ask what you guys think a school would like to see in a short amature film. I have a pretty good idea, but if you could help out with any ideas, please.
P.S. If i come up with something i'll start work on it this year and finish it before i graduate from school so i can send it in before school ends.

Yeesh what a question.
I should imagine that there is no formula here. It's all down to your own judgment. All I can offer is how I would go about it. I think I would concern myself with the below issues and go from there.

Concentrate on the composition of the frame

Don't have too much dialogue

Use daylight as much as possible

I, personally, would stay away from SFX like blood and guns and lasers and monsters etc

Try for something that is timeless, ie nothing too modern and nothing too old

Get your actors (if you have any) to under-act rather than over-act

I think, if you are doing drama, it may be rememberable if you have a twist at the end [/list]
I only offer this a personal angle. It's only what I think examiners *may* be impressed by. I think quite alot could be done with the above restrictions.
Best of luck - let us know how you get on.

well put it this way if your only looking to do what you think will be accepted then you aint really gonna get anywhere. If on the other hand you were to actually do something you liked and all your inspiration, ambition and talent went into it.Then hey you might not get in but then you'd know what kinda track you were on doing your own thing. The main piont is firstly do something because you love it and secondly do it for the people your giving it to.
